A visit to the Fry Art Gallery Saffron Walden

The Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden is holding an exhibition of the work of the mid century artists who lived and worked in Great Bardfield and around that part of Essex. Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious are the most well know. It includes the work of many others, including more recent residents of the area.

The gallery is tucked away in Castle Street not far from here:

The exhibition, apart from showing works by these artists has been arranged to show furnishings they designed and pictures of the interiors where they lived.

These pictures do not do justice to the exhibition – the light was rather soft for photographs so the colours look a bit dingy. But the work feels very English, a bit humorous, domestic and charming. There are also some wonderful pictures by Eric Ravilious done as part of his war artist work, of the crew at work inside a submarine.
