These are some sketches of women working in Britain and men at the front in WW1. As 2014 is the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 I have become interested in what life was like for ordinary civilians caught up in this horrible drama of destruction in which so many were killed and which changed the lives of those who fought and those who stayed in this country. I have been reading Vera Britten’s memoir Testament of Youth and looking at images online in the Mary Evans Picture Library.
I am developing a design for a textile inspired by Toile de Jouy combining figures and vegetation. I will post more soon.
As they are pencil sketches they are hard to see – click on them to enlarge.
